Scenery on Bridge

Oil Painting 235cm×195cm 2014

In the 1920s, Paris served as the artistic hub of the world. Modern Chinese pioneer artists, such as Lin Fengmian, Wu Dayu and Lin Wenzheng, studied in Paris when they were young, talented and ambitious, who strove to integrate Oriental and Western fine arts. The “bridge” here does not only refer to the iron bridge over the Seine, but also implies how Chinese artists went abroad, serving as a bridge between Chinese and Western arts. The fascinating “scenery” also symbolizes the accomplishments of these forerunners in advancing Chinese fine arts and promoting exchanges between China and the rest of the world.

On October 1, 1949, when Chairman Mao Zedong solemnly declared the founding of the People's Republic of China on Tian’anmen Rostrum, more than 130,000 people holding red flags and slogans in excitement responded with extremely loud cheers. This was the rebirth of an ancient nation after going through humiliations and tribulations as well as a sign of a big country on the rise again. The daubs of paint reinforce the atmosphere and portray an epic, magnificent view of the ceremony.

It is a rendition of youngsters dancing, a common scene on urban streets. They dance in a free and agile style, making the image fresh, interesting and dramatic. The artist blends separate characters properly into the whole image with smooth lines and captures the most animated moment. He then adds blocks of colors in varying brightness to project a lucid, dynamic scene, injecting vigor and vitality into youth.

Fading Figures: Portraits of Chinese “Comfort Women”

Comfort women refer to women of different countries who were tricked or forced by the Japanese troops to become their sex slaves during World War II – an ugly, dark page in the history of human civilization. The work depicts elderly women who served as comfort women, their sufferings and the traces of age on their faces. The artist used strokes and ink to portray the wrinkles of these women left by destiny and their sad and bleak eyes; it poses a question mark on their plight, recording the fading national history of trials and tribulations and jolting the heart of the audience.

Bronze Prize

Fragments

Mixed-media 200cm×150cm 2014

Different in nature, iron and paper are communicating in this work. The application of two totally-different materials reflects contradiction and unity: Iron represents modern industrial production; Paper is an ancient Chinese invention as well as carrier for recording the iteration of history. The cold, rigid iron lacerates the soft, tender paper, and the paper records the stretch, erosion, cutting, and deformation of iron. The two co-exist spiritually in infernal fire.

Excellence Prize

Fishing Boats in the Sunset

Fishing boat is a common subject for Chinese painting, and this work is obviously a new attempt on such a traditional theme. A river in the middle separates the space in a natural way, and the river bathes in the golden setting sun. The homebound fishing boats sail lazily from afar, while the banks are lit with lamplights. The artist makes full use of strokes and lines to form a dynamic-static contrast in the image, and nicely integrated the soft touch of ink with dynamic golden color, creating a poetic artistic conception and depicting the happy lives of fishermen.

Ancient Trees and Auspicious Animals

The work is a straightforward portrayal of an interesting encounter – an elk and a toad staring at each other, which together with the old trees and bare rocks makes an engrossing scene. The contrast between the dynamic and the static showcases the harmonious and poetic conception found in nature. Realistic and freehand techniques were combined to depict a simple, ordinary and classic image with intrinsic colors, with no trace of complex or redundant brushwork. The horizontal line leaves the image more space and layers, and a large white background echoes with the dry tree, creating a vivid aesthetic conception.

Excellence Prize

Soundless Place

Oil Painting 160cm×200cm 2014

As an artist in military service, military themes are commonly seen in her works. In this piece, Ruan reproduces a realistic scene of a commander deploying tactical plans to the soldiers prior to a drill. The composition of the painting is sedate. The motions of the figures have no hash; however, beneath the “soundless” scene, there is a majestic power smoldering to break through the temporary balance at any time. The contest and the transit between the dynamics and the static bring the theme to the sublime.

Looking into the Distance

Oil Painting 200cm×120cm 2014

A young lady with a folding fan in her hand is sitting by the window indolently, looking into the distance. The light colors of the painting are simple and harmoniousbringing out the elegance and sedateness of the figure. The artist deliberately simplified the depiction of the figure’s physique and the application of colors to create a concise and decorous effect. This specific static style of the painting reveals the protagonist’s abundant sentiment and feelings for the ideal world, internal and external.

Excellence Prize

Memories

Watercolor 150cm×130cm 2014

Qu Baolai expresses his ponderings of the past and expectation for the future through the description of the vicissitudes of old Qingdao City. In the painting, the frosty hue covers the ridges of the western buildings like a layer of muslin. The horizon in the distance is drifting away like the footprints of the city. The artist intentionally simplified the composition of the painting and deemphasized the overall application of colors by coordinating the relationship of the different levels of hues. The effect is a dreamy and surreal atmosphere in which the story of an old city’s past and rebirth is told. The possibility of watercolor is well illustrated in this artwork.

Serial Pictures 36cm×48cm×4 2014

Kelsang is believed by local Tibetans to be a sacred flower on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and Drolma a goddess. Both the flower and the goddess are symbolic for love and good luck. Traveling in the regions inhabited by the Tibetan people many times, the painters have fallen in love with the places and the people there. Their passion is evidenced in their watercolors depicting people’s spiritual life, such as praying, worshipping the Buddha, and reciting scriptures, capturing the solemn moment of the religious rituals and reflecting a lifestyle, simple yet lofty, beautiful yet sacred.

Untitled

Cartoon 60cm×43cm 2014

On the rooftop of dense buildings, two boys are playing hopscotch – happy-go-lucky, ignoring the danger of the game at such a height. The combination of the suffocating forest of steel and concrete of the city and the fun and hassle-free life of the young boys creates a powerful irony. The depressing and suffocating hue of black-white-grey may provoke the audience’s pondering about urban life, which is full of anxiety.

The manned space mission is a great cross-century endeavor in the Chinese history of science and technology. The continued development in space technology in China has bestowed the country with a strong voice over the planet. It was not the artist’s intention to illustrate the grandeur and excitement of this magnificent campaign. Rather, the work depicts the serenity of astronauts, spacewalking, showcasing the spirit of the Chinese space endeavor. The objects are blurred, with pastel hues applied to part of the work – a way to retain the transparent effect of Chinese ink painting for a space, boundless and profound.

"Coagulated Green" is from a famous poetry by Bai Yuchan, a poet of the Song Dynasty (960-1279). An eyeful of greenery is condensed at this moment. The gurgling brook, swaying bamboo, quiet mountain and flowing fog compose a mysterious and serene world. The work is done with traditional blue-green techniques, where green is blended with blue in heavy ink. The ink and blue-green silhouette against each other and create a strong visual. The work adopted its composition from the traditional hand-rolled form. Each of the four pieces can be admired independently or as an integrated whole, allowing space of imagination for the audience.

The Red Flag Canal

Unseen-Montage

Chinese painting is featured by ultimate pursuit of “experience recreation” – to recreate not only the objective scene, but also the subjective feelings and emotions the audience has in a real experience of the scene. Sun Chao trys to illustrate a theme of time and space with traditional Chinese painting techniques. Time is the fourth dimension beyond the three-dimensional space. The folding-screen-like panels seem like a montage of movie footages, representing various snapshots of different times and space in an attempt to extend the traditional “three dimensional experience recreation” to a “four dimensional.”

Peacekeeping Diary (Red Soil, Blue Helmet)

The work, through the eyes of soldiers in the peacekeeping force, exhibits the rusticity of the Sudanese people and their desire for peace and happiness during years of turbulence. The blue helmet of the peacekeeping soldiers represents peace, devotion and love of humanity. Despite the differences of color, race and religion, humans’ longing for love and peace is unanimous. The artist blends traditional Chinese ink painting technique with a distinctive realistic presentation, and layers and spreads out the figures. The appliance of large-scale rendering brings out the humaneness between soldiers and civilians, and showcasing the glory of humanity.

Landscape in the Distance

The painting was inspired by the artist’s impression of the Mahuangliang area in Yulin, Shaanxi Province. In the twilight of May, the ridges and knolls, the ravines and gullies extend to the horizon at Mahuangliang. Centuries of water erosion has given birth to ravines and gullies replete with variegated sharp lines. Plants are scattered like halos on the flat tops of the ridges and knolls. Layers of rendering were applied in the painting. The large area of ink-splashed sky and the intentionally left beam in the middle introduced a grand skyray aura into the scene. The painting presents tremendous and boundless momentum, although the objects depicted are relatively simple. The scene, with a light sentiment, echoes a line from a Tang-dynasty poem: “The far and away sky bends down to the edge of the earth.”

Torrents of the Spring – Deng Xiaoping and Xi Zhongxun in 1979

The 1970s was a turbulent period and a turning point in China’s history. In 1979, Xi Zhongxun then governor of Guangdong, proposed the idea of establishing a Special Economic Zone in Guangdong to Deng Xiaoping, the architect of China’s economic reform. This initiative has become the driver of China’s economic growth in the ensuing decade. The work sought to reach a rational balance between concretion and abstraction, rendering and delineation, the changing of color and the blending of ink, to best depict the historical moment.

Spirit of the Plateau – Dancers before the Monastery II

In Buddhism, the Sanskrit word “samghārama” is a common name for all types of temples. In Tibet, monasteries are usually local landmarks. The figures here perform a fa dance in front of a monastery, which is commonly seen in important events or festivals to pray for good luck and worship deities. With a mysterious, religious theme, the artist deliberately desalinates a hideous, dreadful atmosphere of the actual performance with focus on the decorativeness and the beauty of the composition, and borrows the technique of delineation and rendering from traditional frescoes to stress the primitive charm and vicissitudes of Tibetan religious ceremony.

Spring is the right season for lilac tree blooming with clusters of white and purple flowers cuddling each other: The purple ones are as bright as sunset glows and the white are pure and fragrant. The artist applied the Chinese “mogu” technique (no skeleton or lines) to draw the flowers and used a Chinese calligraphic technique to outline the leaves and rods. The blends make the flowers more natural, realistic and vivid. The contrast of hued high grey creates a lively scene in the morning mist of early spring. Butterflies hover elegantly, echoing the theme of the picture.

Enlightening Landscape

More than 1,000 year ago, Jin-dynasty poet Tao Yuanming wrote “Peach-Blossom Springs” in which he created an imaginary, fascinating wonderland at the source of a spring full of peach blossoms. For centuries, his imagination has encouraged people to wander and dwell in a remote and hidden world in pursuance of the supreme goodness. The artist employs traditional Chinese painting techniques for a work representative of an ancient style. The multifariously but not miscellaneously depicted mountain streams, dense forests, and hidden pavilions create a tremendous momentum and express the artist’s understanding of nature and life.

Northern China is frozen in the winter. People sit around the stove to keep themselves warm. However, the biting cold cannot stop people from working hard and keep optimist and enthusiast. Using the realism technique of hue art, the artist deliberately exaggerates people’s arms and legs as well as their heavy clothing, making the figures stronger and solider and reflecting their character as tough and forthright. The fire in the stove agglomerates the focus of the whole picture and emanates not only warmth, but also light and hope just like the first rays of the day.

As seasons transit in time, forest, herbs, and little creatures of nature vary with different appearances, postures and colors. These small pieces of the countryside are fresh and elegant and a reflection of the artist’s nuanced observation and feelings for life. The casual notes on the side bring more delight. These vivid and adorable little creatures, through the circle of life, interpret the natural beauty of “a world in a wild flower” and “heaven in a green leaf,” which have greatly inspired the artist.

The image of calabashes and towel gourd tangled by stems all over is an expression of vigor and vitality, and represents freedom under the disguise of entanglement. Life goes on in this seemingly endless process. The artist used a big brush to paint, and the tip of the brush moves freely to allow the pigments to flow around and create natural effects. The image is compact yet neat, depicting the artist's longing for a peaceful, idyllic life.

Making It Happen: Ink Pine

Oil Painting 200cm×195cm 2014

The pine tree has been taken as an important subject for centuries in China. It is revered iconic for the Chinese spirit: firm and indomitable, unbending, straightforward, and generous. The work doesn't look as innocent and beautiful as ordinary women artists do; rather, it appears to be as masculine as the pine tree. The strong, dignified color is symbolic, and her strokes are free, skilled and calligraphic. What she depicts in freehand style is her understanding of traditional culture flavored by Chinese ink painting.

The artist’s nine-year working experience along the border region in Heilongjiang Province left an immovable imprint on his life. The endless forests of white birch in the unique landscape of the northeast constituted a big surprise and a source of excitement for all “educated youth.” The innocent eyes are filled with hope. Despite the passage of time and change of circumstances, the “good old days” remain fresh in his mind. The use of egg tempera injects classical, romantic taste and atmosphere into the painting.

Passing on Lamp

Oil Painting 180cm×120cm 2014

A young Peking Opera actor, holding a lamp in his hand, is waiting to go on stage. He is slightly frowned, getting ready for the performance. Instead of focusing on the front stage, the artist intentionally selects the backstage. The painting reveals the figure’s innermost being and makes him a universal symbol. The set at a Peking Opera show also implies the intention of passing on traditional Chinese culture to future generations, highlighted in the title’s double entendre.

“Gazing” is the theme of this art piece. The work shows the gazes of three people from three parallel spaces that can never intersect: one from a girl in the showcase, one from the girl in the street, and one from the each of the viewers. The three individuals are from different world, but they are associated through the gazing. This subtle association implies the correlation of people with different social identities. The work is thought provoking beneath its realistic expression.

The painting realistically depicts the scene of three young people awaiting a green light on a pedestrian island in the middle of the road. They have books in their arms and bags on their backs. There is confusion in their eyes and doubts about the future, as well as courage and determination, common sentiments at a young age. Through the three figures, the painter expresses an approaching, straight-into-the-eye’s sentiment of adolescence as well as a slight sadness. The work is a microcosm of young people in China.

The artist used striking brushwork and cast out a massive mountain rock in the middle of the painting. The rock has cracked and collapsed from the industrial exploitation brought on by humans, leaving behind a mountain destroyed and scarred. The barren farm land at the foot of the hill represents the decay of life; the smoky cement factory and the machinery in the distance imply a tireless exploitation. The destiny of the mountain provokes ponderings on the future of man’s homeland.

The artist tries to put side the interference of public opinions and re-compel a number of events in history with a sober mind, revealing the fact that in the era of information explosion and consumption, be it an air crash or disaster, a matter of international relations or the welfare of citizens, every seemingly important event will soon be washed out and overwhelmed together with the truth underneath a constant media fray. However, the events are eventually recorded in history. Time is like a mirror, bearing everything silently.

The burial is believed to help ascend the soul through releasing the flesh with the power of nature. Elements including mountains, temples, flying vultures and pilgrim monks help build a sense of holiness of the burial. It is a reflection of the painters understanding and interpretation of reincarnation in Tibetan culture.

A warm and flowery spring finally arrives after a nomad family on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau lived through the cold and desolate winter. The morning of Harbin, a city of ice and snow in northeastern China, is serene, peaceful and vibrant in winter. The outline of the buildings and trees melt like a diffused mist flowing far into the past. The perspective in the composition seems like a fading footage of history. Information technology is changing our lives. Mobile phones and the internet are gradually supplanting traditional ways of communication. The work leveraged one part of Michelangelo’s classic Creation of Adam, where God gives Adam life with a mobile phone in his hand. The technique makes the work realistic, simple and straightforward, with a lingering aftertaste. The painting depicts the characteristics and the charm of caricature language and poses a question: “Is the means of communication in the information age bringing people closer together or making them more estranged?”

Last Dinner

Cartoon 46cm×90cm 2014

"The world's most remote distance is not life and death, but everyone playing with his own mobile phone while sitting together." Nowadays, when old friends get together, after a few words, everyone turns their eyes to their mobile phone. As it makes communication more convenient, the internet inhibits people from natural communication face-to-face. Here, Xiao Wenjin leverages Leonardo da Vinci's famous painting in an attempt to exhibit a different posture and mood for each figure – a portrait of each one of us today: Jesus sits in the middle with his hands spreading out, looking so helpless.

The black background on the annular wood plank creates a grave, gloomy feeling. The moving light and darkness on the plank are well-proportioned, and one can clearly see the evolution of the image, which grows from tiny to large, and is thought-provoking. During the creation of the work, traces of the existed images are left in the plank over time. Chen Qi accurately captured this idea and presented clearly abstract time and being in material, solid form, in an attempt to give a grand narrative of time, life and culture.

The Diaoyu Islands are China's inherent territory. However, in recent years, Japanese right-wing forces have made repeated provocations regarding the sovereignty of the islands and provoked disputes with China.

Based on a village house close to the prosperous area near the ruins of St. Paul’s Cathedral in Macao, Liang Yubao uses adim yellowish light to create a sense of tranquility to depict an impression on hometown. Completely different from the hustle and bustle around the ruins, the two places are close geographically yet seemingly cut off from each other. Old villages are fading away as cities expand, and works like this will be the only record of their existence. The dyeing technique of classical oil painting bestows the entire image with a strong sense of nostalgia, making it an everlasting memory of the good old days.

Its four feet symbolizes kalpavriksha (the manifestation of what one wishes), and the six tusks refer to six pāramitās, which inspire a poetic image in the artists, who employed surrealism to depict from different time and space. The elephant with six tusks, the spirit, the plane, the ship, the rocks and the door and others form a dreamy world, mysterious and spiritual. The full imagination of the artists happens to conform to an ancient Chinese philosophy, ”transcending reality to grasp the essence.”
