Dear Prime Minister
On behalf of a group of Chinese elderly learners at Free Language Corners, I am now writing to urge the government to impose tougher sentences against criminals.
We came to NZ for her green and beautiful reputation as well as seeking a peaceful life. However we are heart broken to see the tragic deaths of three Asian victims within nine days. There has been great concern about the terrible crimes that have happened recently in the Manukau district. We now feel neither safe going out nor staying home.
As new immigrants, we feel vulnerable and are being treated unfairly, as the law only protects the human rights of criminals but not the victims. Most of us have experiences of being robbed, as well as being burgled, and having bags snatched. We need to have our human rights protected as well.
Moreover, we are very disappointed to see there was neither a word of consolation nor condolence to the families of victims from you, but only your strong reaction on condemning the remarks of the leader of AAG.
The leader of AAG may have been intemperate, but this should not detract from the real problem: i.e. the criminals who robbed, invaded homes, killed a hard working young father, a diligent young mother, and an innocent elderly grandmother.
You should understand why 15 thousand Asian Kiwis went marching in the rain and hail. Do you think we just went out to have fun?
This is an election year, so we would like to see tougher sentences against these criminals. We want to urge the government to empower police, rather than denying the reality of increasing crime.
No actions no votes!
