  • Low-budget Chinese travellers highlight shift in Hong Kong tourism
    on May 6, 2024 at 6:47 am

HONG KONG — Cost-conscious Chinese tourists have replaced many of the cash-rich mainland travellers who once flocked to Hong Kong, with some only interested in free walking tours of the city and staying across the border in Shenzhen overnight to save money. During China's Labour Day holiday last week, Laura Li, 28, and her cousin Diego Deng, 20, from northeastern Liaoning province, were among the younger visitors to Hong Kong who preferred to follow walking guides on social media rather than join tour groups or shop in luxury stores. The Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu, also known as Little Red Book, is the must-have app for China's Generation Z — the 280 million people born between 1995 and 2010 — to explore Hong Kong neighbourhoods and offers travel tips to tourists. "Personally, I don't like to be with tour groups because the degree of freedom is too low," Li said outside the Yau Ma Tei Police Station, a neo-classical Edwardian-style building that has featured in local TV dramas and films and is popular with mainland tourists. "I prefer the kind of aimless city walk." […]

  • China launches historic mission to retrieve samples from far side of the moon
    on May 3, 2024 at 11:30 pm

WENCHANG, China - China on Friday launched an uncrewed spacecraft on a nearly two-month mission to retrieve rocks and soil from the far side of the moon, the first country to make such an ambitious attempt. The Long March-5, China's largest rocket, blasted off at 5:27pm Beijing time (0927 GMT) from Wenchang Space Launch Center on the southern island of Hainan with the more than 8 metric ton Chang'e-6 probe. Chang'e-6 is tasked with landing in the South Pole-Aitken Basin on the far side of the moon, which perpetually faces away from the Earth, after which it will retrieve and return samples. The launch marks another milestone in China's lunar and space exploration programme. "It is a bit of a mystery to us how China has been able to develop such an ambitious and successful programme in such a short time," said Pierre-Yves Meslin, a French researcher working on one of the scientific objectives of the Chang'e-6 mission. • Xi's trip to Europe may lay bare West's divisions over China strategy
    on May 3, 2024 at 12:18 am

BEIJING/PARIS - Chinese President Xi Jinping heads to Europe for the first time in five years next week in a visit that may lay bare European divisions over trade with Beijing and how the continent positions itself as a pole between the United States and China. Xi travels to France, Serbia and Hungary at a time when the European Union is threatening to hammer China's electric vehicle and green energy industries with tariffs over huge subsidies the bloc says gives manufacturers in China an unfair edge. With China's economy facing headwinds and the U.S. closing itself off to Chinese firms, the European Union could have some leverage over Beijing. But the bloc's 27 members are not neatly aligned, undermining their ability to shape Chinese thinking, analysts say. Overshadowing the visit are European concerns over Chinese support for Russia's wartime economy two years into its military campaign in Ukraine. Lin Jian, a spokesman for China's foreign ministry, said Xi's visit would "inject stability into the development of China-Europe relations and make new contributions to peace and stability in the world". • Road collapse in southern China kills 36, state media reports
    on May 2, 2024 at 7:28 am

A collapse of an expressway section in China's Guangdong province caused vehicles to plunge and killed 36 people while injuring another 30, state media reported on Thursday (May 2), as millions in the country travel for the May Day holiday break. The collapse, triggered by heavy rain, occurred at around 2.10 am on Wednesday on the Meizhou-Dabu Expressway, Xinhua news agency reported, adding that the collapsed section was 17.9 metres in length and caused 23 vehicles to plunge. Meizhou is one of the areas in southern China's Guangdong that has been badly hit by heavy rain and hail since late April which set off dangerous mudslides, inundated homes and destroyed bridges. President Xi Jinping called for the utmost efforts to save lives and eliminate dangers as the rainy weather continued in the region, according to a Xinhua report. Task forces from the central and local governments have been dispatched for the rescue work, the report added. ALSO READ: Tornado in China's Guangzhou kills 5 and injures 33: Xinhua […]

  • 'Treats us like slaves': China professor makes students clean flat, buy breakfast, help daughter cheat in exams
by Ashwini Balan on May 2, 2024 at 6:58 am

Her job as a university professor was to teach and mentor her students.  Zheng Feng, an associate professor at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, not only did not do that, but she degraded and exploited them instead. She was accused of abusing her power by 15 of her students in a 23-page open letter that was shared online on April 9, South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported. She has since been suspended from teaching and tutoring. In the detailed expose, Zheng, who was teaching wireless communication and digital signal processing technology, is alleged to have made her masters students run errands for her such as buying breakfast, picking up deliveries as well as driving her friends and family. She also got them to clean her flat and help her daughter with her homework. Students were even forced to take exams for Zheng's daughter and participate in competitions on her behalf, local media reported.  They revealed that the professor also made them work in the laboratory for more than 10 hours a day, including on holidays, and expected them to attend meetings after 10pm every night.&nbs […]

  • China travel surges for May holiday but consumers remain wary
    on May 2, 2024 at 2:15 am

BEIJING — Travel by rail and car across China surged on May 1, the first day of a major public holiday, as consumers remained focused on keeping expenses down in a challenged economy. In the run-up to the five-day holiday that began with May Day, domestic airline fares were falling, and forecasts suggested more travellers were opting to drive rather than fly, or had booked early to save. Travel of all kinds has rebounded since China lifted strict Covid-19 control measures at the end of 2022. But consumer spending on those trips has failed to keep up, limiting the boost to the broader economy. China has set an economic growth target for 2024 of around five per cent, which many analysts say will be a challenge to achieve without much more stimulus. China's manufacturing and services activity both expanded at a slower pace in April, official surveys showed on April 30, suggesting some loss of momentum. "There is indeed significant pressure," Lin Yu, 38, who was visiting Beijing from Hangzhou. "Every family's situation is different, and it clearly also depends on the industry you work in." […]

  • Hong Kong businesses shut shop as city struggles to revive post pandemic
    on April 30, 2024 at 9:56 am

HONG KONG — When Jacky Yu, 48, opened his Japanese gift shop in Hong Kong more than a decade ago, the tourist and shopping district of Mong Kok was a bustling hub packed with stalls, street food and tourists. Fast-forward 12 years and parts of the area are struggling to stay afloat, a combination of customers emigrating, locals heading across the border to shop in China or travelling to Japan to benefit from a weak yen — and a dearth of tourists. Yu says he's had to make the "heartbreaking" decision to close his store and move it online. "I almost want to cry when I talk about it," said Yu, packing his unsold stationery and toys into storage boxes. "There are very few tourists on the streets, even the mainland Chinese are very few." Hong Kong is struggling to recover since the Covid pandemic, which saw many expatiates leave after a three year shutdown, and tourist numbers dwindle to a fraction of pre-pandemic levels. High rents and a labour shortage are now adding to the pain. Businesses describe shopping malls as "dead", with low foot traffic and shops covered with "for lease" or "coming up soon" signs. […]

  • China hints at retaliation after Biden signs Taiwan, TikTok legislation
    on April 29, 2024 at 9:27 am

BEIJING — China hinted on Monday (April 29) that it could retaliate after US President Joe Biden signed into law legislation to boost Taiwan's defences and seeks to get TikTok's Chinese owner to divest from the social media platform. Biden signed the legislation on a military aid package on Wednesday, with most of the money going to Ukraine to help it fend off Russia's invasion and to Israel. He also signed a separate bill tied to the aid legislation that bans TikTok in the United States if its Chinese owner ByteDance fails to divest the app over the next nine months to a year. Speaking in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian urged the United States not to implement the "negative, China-related" parts of the legislation. "If the United States clings obstinately to its course, China will take resolute and forceful steps to firmly defend its own security and development interests," Lin said, without elaborating. […]

  • China crash involving Huawei-backed Aito electric vehicle kills 3
    on April 29, 2024 at 9:13 am

BEIJING — Three people, including a two-year-old boy, died after a Huawei-backed Aito M7 SUV burst into flames following a collision with a truck on a highway in the Chinese city of Yuncheng in the northern province of Shanxi, state media said. Aito Automobile, a new energy vehicle brand launched in 2022, is investigating the accident along with traffic police, the company said on its WeChat and Weibo social media accounts on Sunday. Aito said data from the vehicle showed it was operating at a speed of 115 kph (71 mph) at the time of Friday's accident, adding that the airbag opened normally and readings from the battery pack were normal. The company said it was co-operating with traffic police to provide all necessary data to reconstruct the cause of the accident, and support the families involved. Video on social media showed bystanders trying to break the window and door of the SUV as it was lodged under the truck with the front of the vehicle engulfed in flames. The Aito M7, made by Seres Group in partnership with Huawei, with Huawei providing technology for the vehicle and help with marketing. […]

  • China set to launch high-stakes mission to Moon’s ‘hidden’ side
    on April 29, 2024 at 5:17 am

BEIJING — China will send a robotic spacecraft in the coming days on a round trip to the Moon's far side in the first of three technically demanding missions that will pave the way for an inaugural Chinese crewed landing and a base on the lunar south pole. Since the first Chang'e mission in 2007, named after the mythical Chinese moon goddess, China has made leaps forward in its lunar exploration, narrowing the technological chasm with the United States and Russia. In 2020, China brought back samples from the Moon's near side in the first sample retrieval in more than four decades, confirming for the first time that it could safely return an uncrewed spacecraft to Earth from the lunar surface. This week, China is expected to launch Chang'e-6 using the backup spacecraft from the 2020 mission, and collect soil and rocks from the side of the moon that permanently faces away from Earth. With no direct line of sight with the Earth, Chang'e-6 must rely on a recently deployed relay satellite orbiting the Moon during its 53-day mission, including a never-before-attempted ascent from the Moon's "hidden" side on its return journey home.
