President Donald Trump has warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin intends to retaliate for a significant Ukrainian drone attack on Russian airbases. Following a phone call with Putin on Wednesday, Trump stated, “President Putin did say, and very strongly, that he will have to respond to the recent attack on the airfields.”
In a social media post, Trump indicated the more than hour-long call would not “lead to immediate peace” between Russia and Ukraine. The conversation, their first since Ukraine’s drone strike on June 1st targeting Russian long-range bombers, also covered Iran’s nuclear program. Trump said Putin suggested he could assist with nuclear negotiations with Iran.
The Kremlin later added that Trump informed Putin the US had no prior warning of the Ukrainian attack. Russian state-owned news agency RIA Novosti reported Putin told Trump that Ukraine has tried to “disrupt” negotiations and that the Kyiv government has “essentially turned into a terrorist organisation.” The two also reportedly discussed prospects for restoring cooperation between their countries.
This phone call follows recent critical remarks from Trump, who had previously accused Putin of going “absolutely crazy” and “playing with fire.” Last week, Trump had seemingly set a two-week deadline for Putin regarding peace efforts, threatening to alter the US response if he felt Putin was not serious. However, Trump made no mention of this deadline or his prior comments in his Wednesday post.
The discussion also touched on Iran, with Trump stating he and Putin agreed that “Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon.”According to Trump, Putin offered to participate in discussions with Iran to help reach a “rapid conclusion.” This comes as the US reportedly proposed Iran halt uranium enrichment in exchange for supplies from a regional consortium, a plan Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has criticized.
Meanwhile, a Ukrainian delegation, including Deputy Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko and Presidential Office head Andriy Yermak, was scheduled to meet US Senators in Washington on Wednesday to discuss arms purchases and efforts to end the conflict. Yermak stated they planned to discuss “defense support and the situation on the battlefield,” sanctions against Russia, and a reconstruction investment fund.
This news comes after a second round of direct peace talks between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul ended without a major breakthrough, though an agreement was made for further prisoner of war swaps. Ukrainian negotiators reported Russia rejected an “unconditional ceasefire,” while the Russian team claimed to have proposed multi-day ceasefires in “certain areas.” Trump has maintained a belief that progress is being made, despite ongoing hostilities.
