China lodges representations with India over officials' greetings for 14th Dalai Lama's birthday: FM

The Chinese side has already lodged representations to India regarding this matter, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a press briefing on Monday, in response to a Global Times question about Indian senior officials, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and union ministers — extending greetings to the 14th Dalai Lama on his 90th birthday. The Chinese government's position on Xizang-related issues is consistent and clear. It is well known that the 14th Dalai Lama is a political exile who has long been engaged in anti-China separatist activities under the cloak of religion with the aim of breaking Xizang away from China, Mao said. The Indian side should fully recognize the highly sensitive nature of Xizang-related issues, recognize the anti-China separatist nature of the 14th Dalai Lama, adhere to its commitments on Xizang-related matters, be prudent in its words and deeds, and stop using Xizang-related issues to interfere in China's internal affairs, the spokesperson added.

FM spokesperson responds to media report that China provided support to Pakistan during India-Pakistan conflict

When asked to comment on claims by the India reports that China follows "36 stratagems" to provide all possible support to Pakistan during India-Pakistan conflict, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Monday that she doesn't know the specifics of the matter, but China and Pakistan are traditional friendly neighbors, and defense and security cooperation is part of the normal cooperation between the two countries and is not directed against a third party. India and Pakistan are immovable neighbors, and both are important neighbors of China, she said. For some time now, China has been closely following the development of the situation between India and Pakistan, and has been actively promoting peace and negotiation to maintain peace and stability in the region. "We welcome and support the efforts of India and Pakistan to properly address their differences through dialogue and consultation and to seek fundamental solutions. China is also willing to continue to play a constructive role to that end," Mao said. Referring to the China-India relations, Mao added that China-India relations are indeed at a critical stage of improvement and development. "We are willing to work with the Indian side to promote China-India relations to continue moving forward along a healthy and stable track." When asked to comment on claims that the China-Pakistan friendship is not aimed at any third party, but during previous India-Pakistan conflicts, China closely assisted Pakistan at the expense of India, Mao said on Monday that China-Pakistan relations are not directed at any third party, and that China encourages both India and Pakistan to properly resolve differences through dialogue and consultations and jointly uphold regional peace and stability.

China’s human rights lawyers speak out, 10 years after crackdown

In 2015, a nationwide campaign rounded up hundreds of rights advocates. Since then, suppression has become more systematic and less visible, lawyers say

A decade on from China’s biggest crackdown on human rights lawyers in modern history, lawyers and activists say that the Chinese Communist party’s control over the legal profession has tightened, making rights defence work next to impossible.

The environment for human rights law has “steadily regressed, especially after the pandemic”, said Ren Quanniu, a disbarred human rights lawyer. “Right now, the rule of law in China – especially in terms of protecting human rights – has deteriorated to a point where it’s almost comparable to the Cultural Revolution era.” The Cultural Revolution was a decade of mass chaos unleashed by China’s former leader Mao Zedong in 1966. During that time judicial organs were attacked as “bourgeois” and the nascent court system was largely suspended.

Tibetans fear China will eventually name a rival successor to the Dalai Lama, bolstering Beijing’s control over Tibet

Leaders from India, the United States and Taiwan offered their support to Tibet’s exiled spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, on his 90th birthday on Sunday, a landmark anniversary raising geopolitical questions for the future.

Tibetans fear China will eventually name a rival successor to the Dalai Lama, bolstering Beijing’s control over Tibet, the territory it poured troops into in 1950 and has ruled ever since.

Buddhist rebirth v Chinese control: the battle to choose the Dalai Lama’s successor

The spiritual leader has said his inner circle of monks will find an heir, but China believes the choice is in its hands

Few celebrations have the hills of Dharamshala abuzz like the birthday of the Dalai Lama. But this year, as monks and devotees flooded into the mountainous Indian city before the Tibetan spiritual leader turns 90 on Sunday, the mood of anticipation has been palpable.

For years, the Dalai Lama had promised that around his 90th birthday he would make a long-awaited announcement about his reincarnation. Finally, in a video broadcast to Tibetan monks and leaders on Wednesday, he laid out what the future would hold. It came amid fears of a ruthless succession battle between the Tibetan community and the Chinese government, which for decades has sought to control the institution of the Dalai Lama, revered as the highest teacher in Tibetan Buddhism.

Leaders of Russia and China snub Brics summit in sign group’s value may be waning

Rapid expansion of Brics has diluted its coherence as a body offering an ideological alternative to western capitalism

Russia and China are not sending their leaders to a Brics summit starting in Brazil on Sunday in what may be a sign that the group’s recent expansion has reduced its ideological value to the two founding members.

China’s 72-year-old leader, Xi Jinping, has attended Brics summits for the past 12 years. No official reason has been given for sending the premier, Li Qiang, other than scheduling conflicts.

Here we go again: latest Trump tariff deadline looms amid inflation concerns

US is on the brink of launching a trade assault on dozens of countries as 90-day pause on tariffs is set to end on 9 July

When Donald Trump unveiled his “liberation day” tariffs in the spring, only to pull the plug days later as panic tore through global markets, his officials scrambled to present the climbdown as temporary.

Three months of frenetic talks would enable the Trump administration to strike dozens of trade agreements with countries across the world, they claimed. “We’re going to run,” the White House trade adviser Peter Navarro told Fox Business Network. “Ninety deals in 90 days is possible.”

‘Will AI take my job?’ A trip to a Beijing fortune-telling bar to see what lies ahead

Amy Hawkins visits one of the many bars popping up across Chinese cities offering drinks, snacks and a vision of the future

In the age of self-help, self-improvement and self-obsession, there have never been more places to look to for guidance. Where the anxious and the uncertain might have once consulted a search engine for answers, now we can engage in a seemingly meaningful discussion about our problems with ChatGPT. Or, if you’re in China, DeepSeek.

To some, though, it feels as if our ancestors knew more about life than we do. Or at least, they knew how to look for them. And so it is that scores of young Chinese are turning to ancient forms of divination to find out what the future holds. In the past couple of years, fortune-telling bars have been popping up in China’s cities, offering drinks and snacks alongside xuanxue, or spiritualism. The trend makes sense: China’s economy is struggling, and although consumers are saving their pennies, going out for a drink is cheaper than other forms of retail therapy or an actual therapist. With a deep-rooted culture of mysticism that blends Daoist, Buddhist and folk practices, which have defied decades of the government trying to stamp out superstitious beliefs, for many Chinese people, turning to the unseen makes perfect sense.

Hong Kong code of conduct will oblige legislators to ‘sincerely support’ Beijing

Proposal is latest in a series of rules and legislation that have cracked down on the city’s pro-democracy movement

A new code of conduct in Hong Kong will require legislators to “sincerely support” Beijing’s jurisdiction on the city and the chief executive, and prohibits anything that might “vilify” the government.

The proposal for the new code, introduced on Wednesday, included tiered penalties for legislators who breach the code, including suspension without payment for the most serious offences.

How the global trade in donkey skins threatens the lives of women and girls | Letter

This cruel, largely unregulated industry in the global south undermines UN goals of gender equality and poverty reduction, writes Marianne Steele of The Donkey Sanctuary

Re your editorial (The Guardian view on China, Africa and disappearing donkeys: an unexpected crisis offers a clue to perils ahead, 25 June), last year, The Donkey Sanctuary revealed at least 5.9 million donkeys are slaughtered for their skins every year to produce ejiao, a traditional Chinese medicine. Donkeys suffer at every stage – from capture and transport to brutal slaughter. With China’s donkey population depleted, the industry has turned to other countries in the global south.

Despite its scale, this cruel trade remains largely unregulated and invisible, and it is women and girls who suffer most. For many, donkeys are much more than animals – they are co-workers and companions. When a donkey is stolen, household income can fall by 73%. In one Kenyan region, over 90% of women have experienced donkey theft. Children – especially girls – are taken out of school to do the “donkey work”.

EU no longer willing to act alone on climate, 2040 emissions target signals

Bloc’s ambition has been curtailed by rise of rightwing populists across the continent

For most of the past 30 years, the EU has led the world on climate action. The bloc had the deepest reductions in greenhouse gas emissions under the Kyoto protocol; the first climate laws came from EU member states; the first emissions trading scheme, in 2005; and the Paris agreement in 2015.

At times when other major countries – the US, Japan, Canada, China and India at various points – have stepped back, the EU has often stepped forward. There would be no Paris accord had the bloc not won a key battle at the Durban climate summit in 2011 that paved the way.

Dalai Lama defies China to say successor will be chosen by Tibetan tradition

Spiritual leader challenges Beijing in video statement released in run-up to 90th birthday celebrations

The Dalai Lama has declared in a direct challenge to China that the centuries-old spiritual institution bearing his name will continue after his death and that only his inner circle, not Beijing, will have the authority to identify his successor.

In a video message played on Wednesday during prayer celebrations ahead of his 90th birthday this weekend, the 14th Dalai Lama said the Gaden Phodrang Trust, which manages his affairs, would oversee the search for his reincarnation.

EU may as well be ‘province of China’ due to reliance on imports, says industrialist

Stefan Scherer, boss of AMG Lithium, says Europe must become more self-sufficient in critical raw materials and new technologies
