Newmarket
The Ministry of Health is reporting 98 new cases linked to the Covid-19 Delta outbreak.
There are 64 in Auckland, three in Northland, 21 in Waikato, six in the Bay of Plenty, one in Lakes District, two in Hawke’s Bay and one in Nelson-Marlborough.
There is also one new case in Canterbury, however this was reported to the Ministry after 9am, meaning it will be included in Sunday’s tally.
Covid-19 has also been detected in Tairāwhiti Gisborne wastewater for a second time.
Of the ICU cases, two of these are in Auckland City Hospital, three in Middlemore, one in Waikato and the other in North Shore Hospital.
Latest vaccination statistics showed that 93 per cent of eligible Kiwis have received a first dose of the vaccine, with 87 per cent fully jabbed.
The ministry said that Auckland metro DHB – including Auckland, Waitemata and Counties Manukau – now had 90 per cent of its Pacific population with one dose of the
Covid-19 vaccine.
On Friday, there were 92 new cases. It was the first time daily cases dropped below 100 since October 28.
There were 80 cases in Auckland, two in Waikato, one in Northland, five in Bay of Plenty, one in Lakes District, two in Taranaki and one in Nelson-Marlborough.
Friday also marked the end of Auckland’s 107-day lockdown, with New Zealand moving to the new Covid-19 Protection Framework, or the traffic light system.
Auckland is currently in the red phase of the system, but that didn’t stop drunken revellers causing grief for police overnight.
While the central city was less busy than a pre-lockdown Friday night, officers still dealt with “a number of disorder-related incidents involving highly-intoxicated people”, a police spokeswoman said.
One disorder incident led to a person being assaulted on Karangahape Rd, leaving them with serious injuries. A 22-year-old man was arrested and charged over the incident.
About 2000 protesters have marched through Newmarket’s shopping streets – taking over the Broadway retail strip.
The protesters, who earlier today gathered at Auckland Domain, reached Newmarket’s biggest mall 277 chanting “Jacinda must go”.
With a helicopter hovering overhead, the protest then headed to the Governor General’s Auckland home – Government House in Epsom.
Business owners and other members of the public can be seen in shop windows staring bemusedly at the thousands of people blocking the Newmarket roads.
