美国一列货运列车2月3日晚在俄亥俄州（Ohio）东巴勒斯坦镇（East Palestine）出轨，车上所载有毒化学物质引发大火。此事带来的致癌物在这2天内或已随雨水蔓延，污染空气、大量土地和水。当地居民拍摄照片显示，有大量动物死亡。有网民说，这可能成为美国史上大型生态灾难之一。
身在东巴勒斯坦镇疏散区外的农场东主Taylor Holzer说，他合法饲养好几隻狐狸，都已病入膏肓。他说其中一隻出现狂咳及腹泻的徵状，情况恶化得很快。
他也指出，人们所饲养的猫都在生病和死去。除了动物，在受影响地生活的人也出现不适。

事发2月3日晚，在一列运载氯乙烯（Vinyl chloride）的诺福克南方（Norfolk Southern Corporation）列车，在美国俄州出轨后发生火灾。当地居民拍得影片显示，现场大火与黑烟直扑半空，甚至多到能被气象雷达侦测到。黑烟并已蔓延到附近小镇。
出事货运列车有逾100节车厢，约50节在俄州东部邻近宾夕法尼亚州的小镇东巴勒斯坦城（East Palestine）出轨——其中有20节运载有毒物质，出轨的佔一半，包括5个运载压缩氯乙烯的车厢。
当地应急部门来到6日对毒物进行“受控释放”操作，将车厢馀下的化学物进行排放及燃烧。这导致方圆数公里内、近2,000名居民因面临威胁，需要紧急疏散。
有关这场污染灾难还有另一小插曲。当地政府就此事在8日举行的新闻发布会，非裔记者兰伯特（Evan Lambert）报道时被警方粗暴地拘捕。
他被要求勿在州长发表讲话时进行直播报道。警方称他擅闯发布会现场，他被关押5小时并付出保释金后才获释。
从警员随身摄录镜头拍得的影片，可见兰伯特被2名警察押着离开，并将他推倒在地，再向他上了手铐。兰伯特被他们按住时说：“这就是2023年作为一名黑人记者的感觉”。
