There are 90 new cases of Covid-19 in the Delta community outbreak.
There are 74 people in hospital with Covid-19 on Wednesday, including six still being assessed. Six people are in intensive care or high-dependency care units.
The new cases are in Auckland (71), Waikato (nine), Northland (three), Bay of Plenty (five), Lakes (one) and Nelson-Tasman (one).
The virus has also been detected again in a wastewater sample taken in Tairāwhiti Gisborne on December 6, following positive detections on December 1 and 2.
Public Health Officials are not aware of any recovered cases in the region who may be shedding the virus.
A third positive detection “strongly indicates” that there is at least one undetected case in the community, the ministry said.
Anyone living in the region with any symptoms that could be Covid-19 – no matter how mild – is encouraged to get a test.
Of the 74 people in hospital, 14 are at North Shore, 29 are at Auckland City, 28 are at Counties Manukau, one is at Waikato, one is at Tauranga and one is at Nelson-Marlborough. The remaining six cases are still being assessed, the Ministry of Health said.
The average age of those in hospital with Covid is 51.
Thirty-seven cases (57 per cent) are unvaccinated or ineligible due to age. Twelve (18 per cent) were fully vaccinated at least seven days before being reported as a case.
A staff member at Ellerslie Gardens Aged Residential Care facility in Auckland has tested positive for Covid-19.
Auckland Regional Public Health Service and Auckland DHB staff are supporting the residents and staff at the privately owned facility.
A border-related case remains under investigation in the Southern DHB area.
Public health staff have identified 14 close contacts including a household contact. All contacts are currently isolating and will be tested.
There is one new case in Northland, a person from the Bay of Plenty who returned a positive test in Kaitaia.
This case will be recorded in Bay of Plenty District Health Board’s case numbers once interviews have been completed.
Two further cases announced yesterday are counted in Wednesday’s numbers – both been linked to known cases.
There were nine new cases confirmed in Waikato overnight: six in Te Kūiti, one in Ōtorohanga, and two locations are under investigation.
All are under investigation for links to previous cases.
All five new cases in Bay of Plenty are in the Tauranga area.
Public health staff are currently interviewing the cases to determine links to existing cases. Contacts are being identified and will be contacted for testing and isolation advice, the ministry said.
There is one new case in Rotorua, in the Lakes DHB area, which is yet to be linked to a known case. There is also one new case in Nelson-Tasman, which is linked to an existing case.
