Tesla’s path in China clears as Musk courts both Trump and Xi

Billionaire CEO is well connected in the US and China, something that could smooth the road ahead for the electric vehicle maker amid a looming tariff war

If it pays to have friends in high places, few among us can claim to be better placed than Elon Musk, the world’s richest man and one of the only people to have cosy relationships with both Donald Trump and Xi Jinping. His commercial and political connections to both may prove pivotal as the feud between the US and China plays out over the next four years, particularly as Trump promises steep tariffs.

Musk, the billionaire CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, once supported Joe Biden. But his relationship with the current US president soured over the past four years as, among other insults, Musk felt that the White House gave Telsa, his car and green energy company, “the cold shoulder”. Trump, meanwhile, has described Tesla as “incredible” even while pledging to do away with subsidies for electric vehicles. This year, Musk formally endorsed Trump as the presidential candidate, campaigned for him online and off and donated more than $100m to his re-election effort.

Howard Lutnick’s China ties draw fire after Trump taps him to lead trade war

The investment banker Howard Lutnick’s exposure to China came into sharp relief, after the Republican president-elect, Donald Trump, tapped him to lead the agencies that have become the tip of the spear in the US-China trade war.

The financial services firms helmed by Lutnick have profited from ties to China: from BGC Group, which has a joint venture in Beijing with Chinese-state owned China Credit Trust, to Cantor Fitzgerald, which has helped take Chinese firms public in the United States.

Snow Leopard review – enigmatic tale of man v beast is late Tibetan film-maker’s final word

Pema Tseden’s swan song about the fate of a snow leopard imprisoned by a vengeful farmer gains new layers of political meaning following the director’s death

Tibetan film-maker Pema Tseden died of heart failure last year at the age of 53, just months after completing this movie; his health was almost certainly weakened by rough treatment from Chinese police in a notorious 2016 incident at an airport where he was prevented from retrieving his luggage, and the ensuing row escalated when police officers became involved and Tseden ended up in hospital. This ugly and possibly tragic event must surely have influenced Tseden’s final film, which mixes satirical comedy and social commentary and an enigmatic Zen reverie of innocence and experience. The fact that Tseden did die also alters the film’s meaning.

A TV crew is seen making its way in a four-wheel drive across the vast Tibetan plateau to where a monk has told them a furious farmer is keeping a snow leopard – a nationally protected animal – illegally penned up, and intending to kill it in revenge for killing nine of his lambs. The monk is riding along with the crew; he is nicknamed “Snow Leopard” because he himself was radicalised into his vocation as a young man by rescuing another snow leopard – or, who knows, perhaps this very same one – from his farming family who had strung the animal up, intending to whip it to death.

Swedish police investigating the believed sabotage of two fibre-optic undersea cables in the Baltic Sea have said a Chinese ship off the coast of Denmark was “of interest” as Danish officials said its navy was shadowing a Chinese-registered cargo ship.

The ship, identified by Denmark as the Yi Peng 3, passed the two cables on Sunday and Monday about the time it is believed they were severed in a suspected malicious attack. The ship has been shadowed by a Danish navy vessel since it was located in waters between Sweden and Denmark.

Jimmy Lai trial: key points from media mogul’s testimony on first day

Detained pro-democracy activist spoke for first time about charges against him under Hong Kong national security law

Jimmy Lai, the detained pro-democracy activist and media mogul who is the target of Hong Kong’s most high-profile national security case, took the stand in court on Wednesday. For the first time since he was detained in December 2020, Lai spoke publicly about the charges against him, for which he faces spending the rest of his life behind bars.

Four years after his arrest, the 77-year-old seemed older and not as strong as he used to be. His first words – swearing an oath on the Bible – were delivered hoarsely.

‘You have to be prepared for the worst’: making a film on the fight for democracy in Cuba

Documentary film-maker Nanfu Wang found difficulties while following an activist in Cuba for her revealing, and timely, new film Night is Not Eternal

“I don’t believe in America being the beacon of democracy,” says the documentary film-maker Nanfu Wang. “America sliding into autocracy is not something that is unimaginable.”

Terms such as democracy and autocracy have been thrown around a lot since the re-election of Donald Trump as US president. But Wang speaks with unusual authority on this subject. She was born in China and lived under its authoritarian regime until 2011 when, aged 26, she moved to the US because of its promise of democracy and freedom.

My friend Joshua Wong is among those jailed in Hong Kong – the UK must stand up for these political prisoners | Nathan Law

I too suffered this repression. The harsh sentences handed down to democracy activists cannot go unchallenged

Joshua Wong, one of Hong Kong’s best-known pro-democracy activists, was sentenced to four years and eight months in prison on Tuesday. He received a one-third sentencing cut to that period by pleading guilty. Even so, coupled with other charges he faced for his peaceful participation in the 2019 democratic protests, he will be in prison until at least 2027.

I spent my formative years with Wong. We were both student leaders in the 2014 Umbrella Movement, and co-founded the now-dissolved youth-led political party Demosistō in 2016. He gave everything he had to support me in my bid to become the youngest legislator in Hong Kong the same year. In 2020, I departed the city; he remains. The pain of survivor’s guilt hits me every night.

‘Quite dodgy’: what kind of outfit does $80 buy at Temu and Shein?

On the surface, it is possible to assemble a reasonable outfit from ultra fast fashion sites. But look to the seams and you’ll find a mess of raw edges, loose threads and wonky lines

The black cargo skirt on Temu’s website is mid-length with a split up the back. It’s available in three colours and in every photo the model stands in exactly the same pose. From the detail I can see in the waistband, I’m pretty sure the quality will be OK for the $21.98 price tag. I click “add to cart”.

On the next screen I’m told both the skirt and the mesh Mary-Jane ballet flats ($18.78) I’m buying, are “almost sold out”. A small red clock indicates I should hurry. Strategies like this, that generate a sense of urgency and reward, have led to Temu being accused of using addictive and manipulative sales tactics. (When reached for comment, a Temu spokesperson said these “gamified elements” and time-limited deals allowed customers to access even greater discounts.)

‘Capitalism incarnate’: inside the secret world of McKinsey, the firm hooked on fossil fuels

Interviews and analysis of court documents show how the world’s most prestigious consulting firm quietly helps fuel the climate crisis

Two giant, mirrored walls are set to rise out of the sands of the Arabian desert. They will run parallel for more than 100 miles from the coast of the Red Sea through arid valleys and craggy mountains. Between them, a futuristic city which has no need for cars or roads will be powered completely by renewable energy.

This engineering marvel, its creators say, will usher in “a revolution in civilization”. It’s the jewel in the crown of a $500bn Saudi government project known as Neom, turning a vast scrubland into a techno-utopia and world-class tourist and sporting destination. Perhaps a harbinger for the end of oil, it will supposedly put the powerful petrostate at the forefront of the energy transition. For American consulting giant McKinsey & Company, its advising on this project appears to be making good on the firm’s green promises.

Hong Kong media mogul Jimmy Lai defiant as he gives evidence in foreign collusion trial

Founder of Apple Daily paper denies seeking to influence foreign policy against China and says advocating for the independence of Hong Kong was ‘a reality too crazy to think about’

The pro-democracy media mogul Jimmy Lai has said he never tried to influence foreign policy or ask foreign officials to take concrete action on Hong Kong, on his first day giving evidence at his national security trial.

However, he “hoped against hope” that Donald Trump would stop Beijing imposing its national security law on the city, and so sought to have Apple Daily’s coverage of the then president be less critical.

Pacific island governor backs $800m US military upgrade amid China threat

Northern Mariana Islands governor says ‘the world is changing in the Indo-Pacific’ as work continues in the US territory on defense development

The governor of the Northern Mariana Islands says an $800m US military upgrade plan which includes a new airfield in the Pacific territory “has to happen” amid concern over China’s recent missile tests in the region.

Tinian, home to about 3,500 people, is one of the three main islands of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, an unincorporated US territory. During the second world war, the US launched a nuclear bomb against Japan from Tinian, and now a major rehabilitation of a deserted airfield and other military upgrades are under way on the island.

Trump tariffs are coming, but some Chinese companies may already know how to avoid them

Some experts liken tariffs to a game of whack-a-mole, with trade flows simply rerouted if the potential rewards are big enough

Businesses are bracing for the economic impact of a second Trump presidency, which, if his campaign promises are to be believed, will mean tariffs across nearly all imports to the US, especially those from China.

But amid the gloom over the spectre of a renewed global trade war, some manufacturers may be looking to those who already have a playbook on dealing with aggressive US levies, such as China’s solar companies.

The Guardian view on a showtrial in Hong Kong: a new authoritarian low | Editorial

The jailing of 45 pro-democracy activists testifies to the ruthless suppression of a once-vibrant civil society

Defending Beijing’s draconian crackdown on political freedoms in Hong Kong, following the extraordinary protest movement in 2019, the territory’s former leader, Carrie Lam, would claim that there was no “one-size-fits-all” approach to doing democracy. Such rhetoric was, of course, only ever disingenuous sophistry. The conclusion of Hong Kong’s largest-ever national security trial on Tuesday confirmed the grisly trajectory of recent years under Ms Lam’s successor, John Lee: a consolidation of nakedly authoritarian rule has led to the suppression of a once vibrant and politically diverse civil society.

In all, 45 pro-democracy activists were jailed under Hong Kong’s punitive national security law (NSL), imposed by Beijing in 2020. Charged the same year with conspiracy to commit subversion against the state, their “crime” had been, in fact, to pursue a peaceful route to goals including democratic elections for the city’s leader and police accountability.

China and India should not be called developing countries, several Cop29 delegates say

Delegates from poorer nations say classifications that date back to 1992 are obsolete and two countries ‘should be contributing’

China and India should no longer be treated as developing countries in the same way as some of the poorest African nations are, according to a growing number of delegates from poorer country at the Cop29 UN climate talks.

China should take on some additional responsibility for providing financial help to the poorest and most vulnerable, several delegates told the Guardian. India should not be eligible for receiving financial help as it has no trouble attracting investment, some said.

HK47: dozens of pro-democracy activists jailed in Hong Kong’s largest national security trial
