Yet
By Les Wicks
Seeds. Everywhere amongst the careless char
so deep in the rubble
as insignificant as hope. Seeds.
A filthy rain shakes itself clean.
Those few eyes left see desolation
but seeds have begun to burrow with the runoff.
Fungus… hyphae spread out beneath ground
the size of a village grid, this mycelium
sensing rebirth
reaches up towards
what is still a diffuse
promise of light.
The next shower will be cleaner
sprouts rise in a timid applause.
From burnt bark the hardiest grubs emerge from their burrows,
squint upon emergence as all born things have done across eons.
Crows veer down from the peaks towards
carrion revealed beneath denuded trees.
From 8000 metres below sea level
the braver snailfish rise
amidst an inexplicable bounty beneath the ocean’s skin.
Life has had it worse before
& plans anew in a world fresh-scoured.

Music Knows Everything
By Philip Salom
Because it was his unhappy mind on the keyboard
the music came.
If there’s unhappiness to be had
music wants the first movement or the rock band’s
improvising madness.
The lonious Monk’s hat stand
and dancing near the keyboard until his flat hands
bounce on jazz, direct.
Unhappiness? Music banned it.
Told it to go. Music sat down in its place and played.
It is transference. It sits down as an old fakir stands
and takes in the pain.
He said the music was so sad
he felt elated. It is old tragedy he wakes from until
gasping with emotion, his legs lift up, his arms bend
down, tight and soft, he feels it coming in.
Just tidal or sun-storm. A sun in the middle of our insides,
like its own remote, changings our channels.
Music does this, just to know us. Music wants us.

RAW LIKE SANDPAPER
Lou Steer
Be abrasive.
Be that little piece of grit
that wears a hole in the sole of your shoe.
Be that bird whose beak grinds down a mountain
in a hundred years.
Be a piece of garnet hardened sandpaper,
rub off the rough edges,
smooth the way for the hand to move sensuously
over the polished curves that abrasive paper revealed.
Be a diamond crusted file hidden in a loaf of bread.
Use it to carve your way out of your prison of despair.
Leave a trail of crumbs behind you to show others the way out.
Be determined to abrade away
all those things that get in your way,
that stop you from being the person you want to be,
from making the changes you want to see in the world,
the obstacles, rough spots, knots and tangles.
Be the smooth surface polished to mirror clear perfection
so that you reflect all you see,
show it back to the world.
Be abrasive.
Be rough, be raw.
Be ready.

Poetry, and other notions of value
(I timu noa te tai/It’s best to let certain things work themselves out)

attempting to manufacture verse
is quite beyond me, aroha mai.
poetry arrives only through
unexpected exits and entrances,
just as unnervingly,
just as unswervingly.
it is no ABC exercise,
more an algebraic algorithm
which I’ll never comprehend
and certainly
never conquer.

Birth
By Elizabeth Manuai
Conceived of two blood,
High seas and mangrove mud
Fed by the same ocean
Yet aired different notion
My mother belonged to the land
Of parrot feathered headband,
Pandanus fibered skirts
And ancestral land curses.
My father; the son of seafarers;
Great fishermen and sea warriors
That voyaged across the ocean
Settling on the Southern horizon
Emerged from the ambers
of a combination of cultures,
Traditions and legends carried on
I am a thousand in one.

This time…
This time,
When you hear the rain that falls over the bare trees from a bronze sky
And the rows of raven trees all yellow
You ask yourself
Why only a tree stands tall?
In an empty park, lonely rotting day by day
Why do you care?
Maybe because that reminds you the time that has passed
And you feel more older than ever
Like a lonely bird abandoned when the winter comes
Surviving is the only chance
This time,
When your thoughts are lost
And your face shows nothing more than sadness
In pale colours remained tattoo over your filthy skin
That is when you feel the touch of the last season
That is what reminds you of the long starry nights
All of this turns your spirit blue
….when the time passes
You can only see a rainbow that stares over an old church
Acrylic glass
You can only hear the whispers of monks as they go
But you can’t hear the bell
What does that mean?
You feel like an old abused statue with crossed arms
You wait for your sins to be forgiven
If only it was that easy
But no, your demons consume your soul every day
Your disgusting devious eyes only stare at one thing
The only
The innocent saint Magdalene.
I know…!
I know
One day, you will understand
Feathers stay as proof of a flying bird
Lost far away from the horizon
No turning back
No shelter
Very angry
Far away
Anxiety of an escaped shadow
I know
That this emigration has nothing in common with rainy days
Neither the blooming flowers
It is an unusual escape towards time , when the air smells the pain of
earth.
Death of innocent leaves under the meaning of life until madness
I know
that the darkness brings lonely nights
No light, that gives you hope
No dreams, that give you freedom
No tomorrow
But only a dawn related to the shadows of life in chaos.
It feels like the poison of broken hopes
I know
that scream will destroy the walls of broken memories
And what is dead will return to life
No more envy trapped in a spider web
And the voracious crowds and Kings without crowns.

HOPE
By Fernando Cabrera
Such is the miracle of life,
that in us the universe laughs and thinks.
However, and perhaps because of Rubén Darío,
we are often overwhelmed by a fatal expectation.
We are anguished by the wild destiny
of mutating flesh and spirit into energy.
But what if, finally,
that inescapable unknown experience
were just as satisfying,
and even more just and certain,
because this time it is to be forever?
What if with death
we are simply born into a different universe?
IMAGE OF YOU
By Fernando Cabrera
The earth strikes the eye, not the water,
its radical eruption,
its skin on virgin breasts
responding to the ancestral call of the stars.
The earth strikes the eye, not the water,
not the water-colored clouds,
not the trail of the bird in the water,
not the mystic image of the tree diluted in the water,
nor the pupils of fish that traps water.
The earth strikes the eye,
not the water, crystal of light,
not the water, liquid illusion,
not the water, hoarse image of silence,
not the water, persistence of solitude,
not the water, sweat of breath slides.
The eye is struck only by the earth filled with you.

Criticism of Practical Reason
By Mauro Ferrari
Nothing much is happening outside, I tell her
feeling almost guilty for a life
that flows away from either side of the glass
between us in the cold hall.
She wants some coins for tea
– have we got enough money? – and fruit,
still proud of her black hair
and looking into my eyes to discover
if I am too devoured by time,
What should I tell her, how,
that out there everything is going to dust,
imperceptibly, and that a never-reached
perfection is getting grim,
and black is turning grey then white,
and next it will be sheer transparency,
a word, a shadow on the wall,
an echo.
No, out there the glaciers are melting down,
I dare not say, the ground is crumbling,
some die and some pretend
to live. I must run off,
you just stay here, under cover.

Why I Read Poetry
By Kang Byeong-Cheol
Philosophy’s scope is the mundane,
Ordinary existence it seeks to explain.
But poetry may explain life’s profound experiences.
That’s why I choose to memorize poetry,
In its verses, I find a symphony.
From a philosophical standpoint,
I may feel, dizzy and laugh.
Poetry soothes, transcends latent strife,
Leads to contemplation, a tranquil life.
Without poetry, empathy’s hard to grasp,
Humans may be lost in confusion.
Through memorization of poetry, we escape selfish desire,
Engaging in reflection, our souls searching lights.
A wise Man once said,
“Escape and be free,
Escape from self, hatred, madness,
Clear your thoughts and see the truth.”
When illusions are shattered, pure emptiness prevails,
Truth emerges, breaking reality’s veils.
Before the box of truth, ignorant nights’ yearning,
May vanish
As I read poetry, my heart settles and purifies,
Words weave meanings, mending worldly wrong cries.
Poetry sets the mind free, thoughts it stimulates,
Revealing life’s essence, beauty it creates.
In its lines, we find freedom, a boundless realm,
Exploring infinite beauty.
I read poetry, I memorize its grace,
Conversing with the world, on its path I embrace.
So, I’ll continue to read, to memorize with delight,
For poetry guides me, illuminating my sight.

THE SON OF WAR
By Isilda Nunes
You know mother, yesterday I heard you crying.
I was scared, Mom.
I realised that your tears did not augur a good thing.
Dad hasn’t stroked my head in days,
nor you sing Nina Nana.
I feel cold, Mama! I feel night!
I can’t sleep.
I hear, continuously, thunders that shatter my soul.
Sirens that pierce my body.
Bullets that assassinate my future.
I sink in the anxiety that floods your womb in convulsions.
Your heart seems to explode.
Your body seems to expel me.
I try to hold on to the rope that coils around my foot,
in vain. It slips away.
Mother, I’m afraid!
Afraid of living in Humanity.
Afraid of dying and killing.
Don’t you love me anymore, Mother?

POETIC HABITAT
Xanthi Hondrou-Hill
The poets live
in their poems.
They are born in them
they grow up there
they are raised by the words
in the spaces they breath
they are resting on the punctuation
and even when they leave
they exist in the white of every piece of paper
at the edge of every pencil
and in the infinite possibilities of
expression in every language of the world…
Seeds of Peace
by Xanthi Hondrou-Hill
In the ceasefires
I plant at the four corners of the horizon
where the blood of my brothers blackens in the sun
seeds of peace.
In the ceasefires I light candles
to light the paths of the spirit
traced and lived by Gandhi.
In the ceasefires I open the door to strangers
to come and share bread, water, roses.
In the ceasefires I build with my hands
the dreams of children
of the whole world.
In the ceasefires I touch
the hearts of those around me
to erase the pain of the past,
to join together to become a circle
To become dance, joy, song.
In the ceasefires I plant
The seeds of my lyrics
To speak in the tongues of the world
