Sailor Jo Aleh and cyclist Aaron Gate will be New Zealand’s flagbearers at the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics.

The pair were announced at a team function on Thursday evening (local time) attended by Her Excellency Dame Cindy Kiro, the Governor-General.

Jo Aleh was presented with the Te Mahutonga cloak as she was announced as one of two New Zealand flagbearers for the Paris Olympics opening ceremony.

Aleh is a two-time Olympic medallist – she won gold at London 2012 and silver at Rio 2016 alongside crew mate Polly Powrie. She will compete at the 2024 Games with Rio silver medallist Molly Meech in the 49er FX class.

Gate won bronze at London 2012 and will be contesting his fourth Olympics in Paris. The 33-year old track cyclist won a staggering four gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022.

“This is a really special moment and one that definitely took me by surprise,” Gate said.

Aleh, 38, said she remembered as a 10-year-old, watching Barbara Kendall lead the New Zealand team at the opening ceremony of the 1996 Atlanta Games.

“To be given the opportunity to be a flagbearer myself is something I never thought possible,” Aleh said.

Aleh was presented with Te Māhutonga, the first of the New Zealand team’s kākahu (cloak), by Chef de Mission Nigel Avery and Dame Cindy Kiro.
