Mid-Autumn Festival holiday spurs travel demand

A TOTAL of 88.16 million trips were made in China during the three-day Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, which generated a revenue of more than 37 billion yuan (US$5.7 billion), according to the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The festival saw an increase in travel demand. Compared with 2019, hotel order volume rose over 20 percent. Meanwhile, ticket booking volume jumped nearly 30 percent, with car rental orders up by 77 percent, according to data released by travel platforms such as Trip, Qunar, Lvmama, TravelGo and Mafengwo. The most popular tourist destinations were mostly concentrated in southern and eastern China. The number of short-distance travel product bookings also soared 46 percent compared with 2019. Besides theme parks like Universal Beijing Resort, low-priced airplane tickets were another element that boosted people’s passion for traveling. The average flight ticket price and average hotel night price on TravelGo were lower than the May Day and Dragon Boat Festival holidays. “Moon-gazing flights” — flights that depart between 7pm and midnight — became a new choice for travelers between September 19-21, especially those on the east-west flight route where visitors can admire the full moon up close through the porthole on the plane. TravelGo and Qunar released over 7,000 “moon-gazing flights” for the Mid-Autumn Festival, with the minimum cost only about 200 yuan (US$31). Some 34.99 million railway passenger trips were made across the country during the four-day festival travel rush, China State Railway Group Co Ltd said. The number of railway trips recorded in the Yangtze River Delta region comprised over one-fifth of the national total with 7.6 million trips. A sound traffic environment was created for people to go home for family reunions or visit tourist attractions, with no large congestion or major road accidents taking place, according to the Ministry of Public Security. Confronted with the double pressure from epidemic prevention and ensuring social security, public security authorities ramped up security precautions in key areas and public venues. A total of 175 large-scale events were held safely, and the reported number of criminal and public security cases fell nearly 30 percent and 23 percent year on year, respectively, the MPS said. The Mid-Autumn Festival is generally regarded as one of the most important traditional festivals in China and falls on the 15th day of the eighth month on the Chinese lunar calendar.

Xi: China to stop new coal power projects abroad

President Xi Jinping has said that China would not build new coal-fired power projects abroad, using his address at the United Nations General Assembly to add to pledges to deal with climate change. “China will step up support for other developing countries in developing green and low-carbon energy, and will not build new coal-fired power projects abroad,” Xi said in his pre-recorded video address at the annual UN gathering on Tuesday, in which he stressed China’s peaceful intentions in international relations. “This is another remarkable step taken by China on its own initiative to cope with the global climate change, as Xi earlier announced China’s pledge to strive to peak carbon dioxide emissions before 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality before 2060,” said Ruan Zongze, China Institute of International Studies executive vice president. United States climate envoy John Kerry quickly welcomed Xi’s announcement, calling it a “great contribution” and a good beginning to efforts needed to achieve success at the October 31-November 12 COP26 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, Scotland. Alok Sharma, head of COP26, also hailed the announcement. “It is clear the writing is on the wall for coal power. I welcome President Xi’s commitment to stop building new coal projects abroad — a key topic of my discussions during my visit to China,” he said on Twitter. Besides decreasing coal-fired power projects, China has pledged an additional US$3 billion of international assistance in the next three years to support developing countries in responding to COVID-19 and promoting economic recovery. “Development holds the key to people’s well-being,” Xi said. He unveiled a six-pronged Global Development Initiative — staying committed to development as a priority, staying committed to a people-centered approach, staying committed to benefits for all, staying committed to innovation-driven development, staying committed to harmony between man and nature and staying committed to results-oriented actions. Xi spoke after US President Joe Biden gave his first UN address. Biden mapped out a new era of vigorous competition without a new Cold War. Xi called for building a new type of international relations based on mutual respect, equity, justice and win-win cooperation, and doing the best to “expand the convergence of interests” and “achieve the biggest synergy possible.” “One country’s success does not have to mean another country’s failure, and the world is big enough to accommodate common development and progress of all countries,” he said, adding that differences and problems among countries need to be handled through dialogue and cooperation on the basis of equality and mutual respect. “Recent developments in the global situation show once again that military intervention from the outside and so-called democratic transformation entail nothing but harm,” Xi said. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the restoration of the lawful seat of the People’s Republic of China in the UN. Xi said China will solemnly commemorate this historic event and advance cooperation with the UN to a new level and make greater contributions to promoting the UN’s noble cause.

Local COVID-19 cases send Harbin into semi-shutdown

CHINA’S northeastern city of Harbin went into semi-shutdown after reporting new locally transmitted COVID-19 cases for the first time since early February. As of 4pm yesterday, the Heilongjiang Province capital had reported 11 locally transmitted cases in the latest outbreak. The last reported local cases in the city were on February 4. Harbin, known for its minus 30 degree Celsius winters, yesterday vowed to complete an initial round of city-wide testing of more than 10 million by today, and told its residents to refrain from stepping outside their homes, unless necessary, before test results are out. COVID-19 vaccinations have also been suspended for three days in an effort to focus on the mass testing. The city has already told its residents to avoid leaving town unless for essential reasons, and those who do leave must produce proof of negative test results within 48 hours from departure. Indoor venues such as cinemas, gyms and mahjong parlors were also shut, and tourist sites were ordered to limit visitor traffic at half of their capacity, state television reported on Tuesday. The city would also suspend offline classes at all kindergartens, primary schools and high schools for a week from yesterday, state television said late on Tuesday. It was unclear if the new Harbin cases were linked to the current outbreak in the southeastern province of Fujian. According to state television, first of the cases was found when the person went to a local hospital for testing. Other two, close contacts of the first case, returned to China from the Philippines in late August and were first quarantined in the southern city of Guangzhou before being quarantined again at home in Harbin. Bayan County, where the three cases lived, suspended bus and taxi services and locked down some areas. In Fujian, the cities of Xiamen and Putian reported a total of 13 new cases for Tuesday, according to the National Health Commission yesterday, down from the average daily count last week. Vice Premier Sun Chunlan said on Monday that local officials should not be blindly optimistic about the progress made in Fujian, because uncertainties remain and the battle against the coronavirus was still in a “deadlock,” state media reported. Sun demanded that efforts to seal communities at risk of the virus should be stricter, Fujian Daily reported. Apart from Putian and Xiamen, Quanzhou and Zhangzhou have also reported local cases. The four cities have all told residents not to leave town unless for essential reasons. They have also locked down high-risk areas, closed public venues, and halted offline lessons at kindergartens, primary schools and high schools.
