Aviation firms positive on Chinese market
Commercial planemakers touted strong post-pandemic prospects for the Chinese aviation market as the country’s largest air show opened yesterday, with an increasing share of the spoils expected to go to domestic manufacturers. The normally biennial Airshow China in the southern city of Zhuhai, delayed by a year because of COVID-19, is being held until October 3. Commercial Aircraft Corp of China said it expected China’s share of the global passenger aircraft fleet would rise to 22 percent by 2040 from 20 percent in 2020. Its latest market forecast said 41,429 passenger jets worth US$6.2 trillion are expected to be delivered globally over the next 20 years. Passenger demand is expected to rise by an average of 3.9 percent a year globally and 5.7 percent a year in China over the next 20 years, the planemaker added. COMAC forecast that over the next 20 years, Chinese airlines would need 953 regional jets with 90 seats, the size of the ARJ21. That compared with 261 planes with 120 seats like Embraer E2 models and the smaller version of Airbus A220. COMAC deputy marketing manager Yang Yang said there was enough room in the market for all players. “The aviation market is as vast as the Pacific Ocean, where we have our own competitive territories,” he said. COMAC expects local certification this year of its larger 160-seat C919, a rival to the Airbus A320 and Boeing Co 737 families, though it will take time to ramp up production. “It reminds us that we need to fully listen to our customers and use our best products and best services to support our customers, because the post-COVID aviation market is full of competition, which is more intense than before COVID,” Airbus China CEO George Xu said of the C919’s entry into the market. Xu said on the show’s sidelines that the manufacturer was still in talks with China about certification, which along with support services was the key to customer confidence in placing orders. “We believe the Chinese aviation market will become the world’s largest in the future. Embraer has already built a strong and positive presence on the market providing a solid foundation for our most advanced jet, the E2,” Embraer Commercial Aviation CEO Arjan Meijer said in a statement. China’s J-20 fighter jet flew at the show with domestic, rather than Russian-made engines for the first time. On the ground, China showcased a prototype of the CH-6 long-endurance drone capable of reconnaissance and strike operations. The drone has a cruising altitude of 10,000 meters, “but it can go as high as 15,000 meters,” said Qin Yongming, general manager of drone maker Aerospace CH UAV Co. “It can fly for longer periods (than previous models) … it can carry out longer missions, with higher efficiency without any time limits.” Other debutants included the WZ-7 high-altitude drone for border reconnaissance and maritime patrol, as well as the J-16D fighter that has the ability to jam electronic equipment. Both have already entered service with the Chinese Air Force, state media reported. Organizers said the next Airshow China will be held from November 8 to November 13, 2022, and returning to the pre-pandemic schedule.

Solar exploration satellite on display
China plans to launch its first solar exploration satellite this year, with a model of the new hardware on display at the 13th China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition. China will enter a new era of solar exploration with the satellite’s launch, said the Shanghai Academy of Spaceflight Technology under the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corp. According to the SAST, the primary payload on the satellite will be the solar H-alpha imaging spectrometer, which will gather images of the sun in the H-alpha spectrum. It will help researchers observe changes in the sun during solar flares, such as changes in its atmospheric temperature and velocity. The satellite’s design includes the separation of its platform cabin and payload cabin, thus ensuring the ultra-high pointing accuracy and stability of the payload. China has established a ground-based solar monitoring network and made achievements in research fields such as the solar spectrum and solar magnetic fields, but it has yet to conduct space-based solar exploration. Experts hope that space-based solar exploration will advance China’s basic research on the sun, and drive the development of relevant high-tech industries.

Resort apologizes for guide dog refusal
The Chimelong Tourist Resort in Zhuhai City, south China’s Guangdong Province, apologized on Weibo yesterday morning for not allowing a guide dog to check into a hotel along with its owner. The Chimelong Penguin hotel refused to allow the man, surnamed Yang, to check in with his guide dog on Sunday evening even though he showed the staff the animal’s certificate. The hotel told Yang it didn’t have regulations on guide dogs and also initially denied a refund for his room charge. It gave Yang a full refund after he reported the incident to the police. According to the apology letter, the resort said its staff failed to understand the situation with regard to the reception of guide dogs due to “lack of training.” Resort apologized for refusing entry to guest’s guide dog The resort said in the apology letter that it would improve guide signs in the hotels, restaurants, and theme parks for visually impaired people and their guide dogs according to the country’s laws and regulations. The resort said Yang has accepted the apology and the resort’s invitation to revisit. The resort, adjacent to Macau, is located in the Hengqin New Area, part of the province’s pilot free trade zone. It opened to the public in 2014.

Supply of energy to be ensured
CHINA has taken a slew of measures to cope with the emergency of tightened power supply to meet people’s power needs and ensure economic growth and social stability. Work teams have been dispatched to Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, eastern Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang and Hunan, the National Energy Administration said. They have conducted on-site supervision and guided local governments and enterprises to implement power supply measures, increase energy supply, and make all-out efforts to guarantee energy supply during the coming winter and spring. From Thursday to Saturday, a team led by NEA Deputy Director Ren Jingdong went to regions of Ningxia and Shaanxi. The team required local governments and enterprises to exploit the potential of increasing energy production, prioritize coal supply for power generation and heating to meet people’s needs, and promote social and economic stability. On Saturday, major coal production, mining enterprises, and power supply and heating companies in northeast China signed mid-to-long term coal supply contracts to ensure coal supply for the coming winter in the region, the National Coal Exchange Co Ltd said. The National Development and Reform Commission has also notified local governments and relevant enterprises to promote the signing of such mid-to-long term contracts to prioritize thermal coal supply.

Water diversion project quenches thirst in Gansu
A MAJOR water diversion project in northwest China’s Gansu Province has been completed as the second phase of the project began supplying water yesterday. The project is expected to alleviate water shortages for more than 6 million people in the province, local authorities said. The project is designed to deliver an average of 550 million cubic meters of water every year from the Taohe River, a major tributary of the Yellow River, the country’s second-longest, to cities and counties suffering severe water shortages in the central part of Gansu, through its nearly 1,070-kilometer-long canals. Construction for the project first started in 1958, but was suspended three years later due to lack of funds and insufficient technology. After close to half a century, the project restarted in 2006 and completed its first-phase construction in 2014. A total of 575 million cubic meters of water has been diverted from the Taohe River to central Gansu since then. “It is one of the country’s 172 major water conservation and supply projects, also the longest water diversion line with the largest investment in the province,” said Zhu Jianhai, director of the provincial water resources department. Statistics show that Gansu’s central region, located on the Loess Plateau, had long suffered the most severe droughts in China, with the per capita water availability only one-third of the national average. Water shortages also held back economic and social development in the region. Twelve out of 13 counties and districts that have benefited from the project were once poverty-stricken. “It’s like a dream come true,” said 83-year-old Liu Fu, who participated in the old construction work and can now enjoy clean tap water in his kitchen. “From this day forward, our days of drinking bitter cellar water are over.” “Thanks to the hard work of several generations, the locals are now able to use clean water to irrigate their land, develop new industries and pursue high-quality development.” He added the project is expected to play an important role in consolidating the achievements in poverty alleviation in the target areas and pushing forward rural vitalization.
