Nearly 165,000 migrants eligible for fast-tracked residency
Thousands of migrants on temporary work visas will be fast-tracked for residency after a major immigration policy shift from Immigration Minister Kris Faafoi.

The government has confirmed it is setting up a one-off resident visa, that could see about 110,000 people already in New Zealand apply.

A one-off residence pathway visa will be offered to the roughly 165,000 migrant workers and their families stranded here through the pandemic.

The one-off resident visa would create a residence pathway for about 165,000 migrant workers and their families, including more than 5000 health and aged-care workers, about 9000 primary industry workers, and more than 800 teachers.

New 2021 Resident Visa

Some work visa holders currently in New Zealand as well as some critical purpose visitor visa holders may be eligible to apply for residence under the new residence category – the 2021 Resident Visa.

On 30 September 2021, the Government announced a new one-off residence visa pathway for some temporary work visa holders currently in New Zealand. Partners and dependents can be included as part of these residence applications.

To be eligible you must:
- have been in New Zealand on 29 September 2021, and
- be on an eligible visa or have applied for an eligible visa before 29 September 2021 that is later granted.

Critical Purpose visitor holders

Two groups of Critical Purpose visitor visa holders will be eligible, as long as you arrive in New Zealand and apply before 31 July 2022.

- Critical health workers for longer term roles (6 months or longer), and
- Other critical workers for long term roles (more than 6 months).

Applicants who have lived in New Zealand for three or more years

The 2021 Resident visa will be open for applications in two phases, with the first group of people able to apply from 1 December 2021.

From 1 December 2021 you can apply if:
