GOLDEN BIRD OF THE SUN

Into the open window,

If you appreciate beauty,

Golden Bird of the Sun

He comes to us in Chengdu.

And head over to flying,

Will dictate a stanza to you

About Chinese Poetry:

About Li Bae and Du Fu.

Explain as a person

Using ordinary words,

How to get across the river

Ablutions of flowers.

Arrives as the Messiah

And carries the good news

About China, about Russia!

And that there is friendship!

在填色之前试着削尖铅笔尖;

她的眼睛足以表达她对我的感受;

Colour of the Sun

She is busy colouring her thoughts

The fingers restlessly

Move across the drawings

On the card board paper.

“What is the colour of the sun?” she fumbles–

Yellow, orange, or crimson red–

Who knows it? The colour of the sun?

She takes a colouring pencil, and before she fills in the colour,

She tries to sharpen the tip of the pencil;

The tip breaks again and again…

And it only sharpens her nerves.

Irritated, confused, she raises her head,

Slowly, turns it a little right,

And gives a puzzled look at me,

Her eyes are enough to tell what she feels about me;

But I have never coloured a sun, you know!

I have never felt it closely to know its colours.

At times, I have hated the irresistible heat,

Or, its absence too.

But colours? Does the sun have a colour at all?

With my little daughter, the sun smiles,

And how do I tell what colour is the smile?

It’s raining heavily outside, and inside

My conscience erodes to create a grim, bleak lake

That receives the reflection of the sun.

What colour is the sun in the lake?

The colour of my mind, probably.

To my daughter, I could just say–

Paint your own sun, dear!

乔治·华莱士George Wallace(美国)

我们所有人仍生活在天堂;

她的大腿柔顺而机警,脸色黝黑;

一些童话中的犯罪;

在伊甸园用安详的翅膀爱抚;

瀑布里的夏天和阳光;

在夏娃的手中同样是完美的存在;

FOR ALL WE KNOW THIS IS PARADISE

what if apples were still apples,

snakes still snakes, and we are

all still living in paradise; what if

eve is in the summer of her years,

running with the antelope, thighs

supple and alert, her face tan;

what if no nobody has had to

crawl on their belly on account

of some fairy tale crime; adam

lies blameless in a grove of

ripe pears, admiring eve’s gait,

admiring how evening light arrives

in eden on hushed wings to remind

him of love’s caresses; no temptation

no shame, just a curious bird, singing in

sweet ellipses, singing with the trees,

a song with no words, about god and

summer and sunlight in waterfalls;

a simple song, about how perfectly

a pear fits in adam’s hand, equally

perfect in eve’s hand too; and how

generously its juices spill onto

his chin and hands and chest,

(almost as if it was by design),

singing how we are all of us

two halves of a single fruit

hanging from a paradise tree

Short Island Poems, “Adaİkus’

Don’t feel sad

despite the wine ban

the grapes are growing in the vineyards

*

When the creek dried up

the yellow narcissus forgot

that she was beautiful

*

In the August heat

only the old frog neticede

the storks migrating way up in the sky

*

The baby seagull, broken-winged

waddled bashfully

along the beach

*

There was thunder but no rain

autumn

was making a sound check

Questions About Human Nature

That man often displays a kindness

which costs his fellows dearly

(because he hesitates to fight his enemies) –

it human nature?

That he often gives proof of remarkable

wickedness, which returns to haunt him

(because he agrees to serve his own enemies)

that he curses the vicissitudes of time

(about which he can’t do much)

but remains silent before injustice,

that he cons the secrets of nature and commands the atoms

but can’t command his own history –

is this in the nature of things?

That the majority lets itself be dominated by the minority

and that the progress of some

is at the cost of others’ misery –

is this an immutable social law?

That in the course of his life the individual often

moves from the left to the right

and that revolutionaries having seized power

change into conservatives –

is this a product of eternal human nature?

So many theoretical questions

Which call for a practical answer.

阿德尔·霍扎姆 Adel Khozam(阿联酋)

Eraser

The free poems the Dervishes used to recite died with them

And poems that glorify kings are what’s left

What should I write today?

No kings know me, and I don’t know them

My horse reins a palm leaf

My shirt has all its buttons cut off

Should I climb the back of the pen and kick it in the balls?

My pen…

It was a camel, it was a sword and a tongue

But slap after slap,

it became an eraser to itself

It became the forgetfulness that memory writes,

when it wants to get rid of its pus.

安尼苏尔·拉赫曼Anisur Rahman(瑞典)

I Am Sheikh Mujib(Excerpt)

A tale of dark days in prison for fighting for freedom and justice.

This monologue brings back the voices of people whose heritage

is located in the Indian Subcontinent. I am inspired to seek out

those people once more, to share and discuss this captivating

piece of writing. Anisur Rahman’s energy, attention to time and

place, personal connection and knowledge of the changes in 20th

Century India give this apposite monologue gravitas and agency.

The piece traces the political and cultural basis for, and impact of,

the creation of Pakistan and ultimately an independent

Bangladesh. From the perspective of Sheikh Mujib, much of the

monologue is set during his many prison terms as he reflects on

his life from the late 1930s to the mid 1970s. He considers his

move through activism and politics, and his role in the fight for

a fair and just Bengal for Muslims and Hindus. The foundation

of his sickly childhood, the aspirations he shares for his own

children, and his concern to support the vulnerable are integral

lights in his humanity.

I am a man for works.

What I think, I try to do it.

I made mistakes, I corrected them.

Whether you read this on the page, or hear the voice in

performance, I am sure that you will be moved by this personal

insight into the major political struggle and change that helped create Bangladesh.

卢茜拉·特拉帕佐Lucilla Trapazzo(瑞士)

Still Frame

The Libeccio descends

upon the red dressed city,

drenched with sand.

Far away a train is blowing

its greeting. In this field of fog,

time stops, the mind goes gray as

asphalt, the vision expands even as

it dilates, rolling and flowing along,

obscuring the yellow of the fields,

leaving all things to search for

the valence of their being.

A chair is essentially a chair,

also in a picture on a wall. A rose

is still a rose, even if in the head

I retain its features. Constant

nexus is the idea. Shaping synapses.

Nothing else. At the bus stop

an old man is sitting and smoking a pipe.

He is waiting for evening to come,

perhaps, or just for his tram.

All Whispering

By Christine Peiying Chen(New Zealand)

Before a poem becomes a poem,

A deer collides

In the last moment when the glass bottle falls

A scream! Butterflies scatter, white light bursts into flames

… Until leaves gracefully lie down,

A painting of still life

Before you become yourself

Lake waters stir, bodies undulate with the waves

Thud! A whale descends

The bed of ocean, covered with shimmering light

… Until the tide recedes, the moon sinks to the land

The land rising into mountains—

Mountain forests nurture, serene

Time tiptoes through, softly and steadily

In the silky robe, pauses, ponders, and tries to comprehend–

Your collar is blue , the world in splendor, everything softly hums

I hold my breath, listening

To the gentle singing of the spirit
