Midsummer

Midsummer, the forest hides its restlessness.
Under the tree, a spider gives a snapshot of its daily life.

First, a long silk drops down from the tree,
hanging from a leaf all the way to the grass.
The spider swings freely and enjoys itself in the breeze,
listening to a bird hopping left and right.

Almost noon, the ravenous spider starts to weave a web
and spans it across the branches in no time.
The spider crouches in a corner and waits for a prey.
The thrill of killing is over instantly:
a small insect — a dashing pilot a second ago —
accidentally hits the web. Unsuspecting, unaware,
it has become the spider’s delicious lunch.

The former is unconcerned;
the latter no longer needs to concern;
together they personify the natural world.

Carefree Is the Mood of Spring

A cloud crowns the mountain with a white hat.
The footpath cannot push back the brambles, laced with flowers and grass.
A stream splashes down from the cliff, then roars to the sea.
Spring winds, ah, they play some rogue games,
spreading the scent of wildflowers everywhere,
bewitching cattle and sheep, and
luring men and women in their touring cars to go astray. . .

Carefree is the mood of spring.
The mountains are unmoved, meditating into oneness.

Legend of the Sea

She sat in the middle of the sea, surrounded by constellations.
Shrimps, crabs, eels performed a dance in her palace.
A brigade of whales ushered in the troupe, followed by seagulls treading water,
then the curtain opened — it was a starry, starry night.

I sat on the reef on a headland.
The wind was fluttering, sending the chimes ringing.
In the moonlight the sea looked translucent,
and the waves in my heart had not yet surged. . .

Then she laughed, delightful and playful like a wave.
The billows carried her laughter to the other side of the sea,
but it had faded into a whisper when it reached my ears.

But this tiny whisper was enough to steal my heart,
and turned me into a seeker at sea for the love that came only so briefly.

Philosophy of Deep Alley

On Yuexiu Road, flowers and greenery are everywhere.
Some like it rowdy, others prefer privacy.
Endless quarrels and lingering kisses, all of them
are hidden away in the depth of this winding alley.

Thousands of years ago, the Sixth Patriarch was here and said:
The air is still, so is the pennant.
It is your heart that is quivering.
Why should the hubbub outside the temple have anything to do with you?

The land up north is wide open and plain,
but the south hides a little Zen in its luxuriance.
Do you really want nothing from the world?
An aside: it is not spring that is tempting you,
it is your heart, the heart that refuses to accept less.

Unearthed in Yiwu

Yiwu is a trendy place, the epitome of international trade.
Yiwu is also very earthy, marked by the typical image of
a hustling peddler with a rattle drum.

At Yiwu’s bus station, a bazaar’s energy cannot be mistaken —
the smell of sundries, spices, and sweaty bodily odor.
Laughter, crying, and squabbling commingle to raise a torrent.
A Rolls Royce is stuck in the traffic amongst migrants with shoulder yokes.
Anxiety, jubilance, pain flash through people’s faces, until
it’s impossible to separate tears from rain as they seep into the earth.

Here, the meaning of grassroots comes alive.
During a short trip to Yiwu, my usually spiffy
corduroy trousers caught some of the long-parted mud.
Most metropolis have only the concrete pavement,
but here, there is also the earthy fragrance of soil and weeds.

Famous Loneliness

For depression, we rely on wine for diversion.
For severe cold, we pray for rain to break it up.
So, in early spring, I am either drinking
or sitting by the window, listening to the rushing river.

Better yet if, inside the frosty windows, there is a woman to cuddle.
No one can really live with loneliness.
We must broadcast our loneliness, so it beats
everyone else’s loneliness and becomes the most famous loneliness.

The Sorrow of Looking Back at Luojiashan

For many years, I only wanted to remember the brimming cherry blossoms at Luojiashan.
So sad that I wasted the whole four years,
so sorry that the spring of youth and the glorious landscape are gone forever.

Indeed, Luojiashan was such a beautiful college campus.
All the men who didn’t declare their love then now admit it to their friends.
They are chided as silly geese, and receive no sympathy.

At the reunion, these middle-aged classmates use their tipsiness as cover,
rushing to confess whom they secretly loved, and guess who else loved whom.
And those women, still alluring, reply with regret: Why didn’t you say so back then?

Finally, after drinking at least ten bottles of hard liquor and more beer,
all the men stand up and bow their heads,
apologizing to the women who are still not married,
apologizing for having wasted such beautiful time and opportunities.
One of them even cried, kneeling on the floor.

Those Great Peaks

Bogda Peak, Chogori,
Tomur Peak, Khan Tengger,
and Muztag Peak, Friendship Peak . . .

Whenever I talk about these great mountain peaks with friends from Xinjiang,
I am always awe-struck, unable to contain my excitement,
but they remain muted, as if
the discussion is about one of their relatives or friends
— so familiar that they chitchat or dillydally about it.

Indeed, in Urumqi,
I only need to open the window to see
Bogda Peak glittering in the sun.

Jingting Mountain

None of our work can compare
with the spring breeze that triggers the flowers to bloom,
urges the birds to sing, cheers things up,
and makes love shine!

None of our work can compare
with the bird that soars into the blue sky
and returns to nest at dusk.
We prodigal sons, what should we do with our lost souls?

None of our work can compare
with the pavilion on Jingting Mountain.
It is the heart of the mountain, amongst stupendous vistas,
enshrined by pilgrims from everywhere, gathering here like clouds.

None of our work can compare
with the verse of the wine-soaked Li Bai.
His poetry summons us here to tipple and wail,
to forget the differences between new and old eras,
to lose ourselves amongst mountains and valleys.

Let Us Do Something for Spring

People with the long memory of rumbling thunder
believe it announces the arrival of Spring from the sky.

I have secretly resolved to beat the lethargy of the hypnotizing heated room.
I shall rein in my horse before the precipice, and do something for Spring.

Even if it is still locked in the epic battle with Winter, even if Winter refuses to surrender,
even if we still need a bright moon to help to lift the fog,

let us welcome the darting arrows of swallows from up high,
let us play the flute and offer a bright tune to the sky.

This way, Spring may bust through the barricade to delight us,
and deliver puffs and puffs of clouds to every corner of the world.
